"The Language of Eyes", Sterling Silver, Copper and Brass Brooch
Recently, in a comment someone wrote, (and I paraphrase) “I like your work but the eyes creep me out, I don’t get the obsession.” I didn’t respond because I didn’t know how to at that very moment. In the meantime I thought about a couple of things: 1. how humans can “read” eyes and the myriad of communication that they relay and 2. how when eyes are concealed we can’t read what’s going on and that makes us uncomfortable so that person is suddenly deemed mysterious and unknown. In this piece I wanted (without actual eyes) to communicate these two ideas. The inspiration for this form was taken from a photograph that I saw on instagram of a pair of antique welder’s goggles that came complete with a nose guard. They were one of the most beautiful and intriguing things. My goggles are made out of hammered copper and silver and when the eye shields are lifted we can read the words associated with emotions that eyes communicate. So my response to the comment is complete with this piece. I hope it helps to clarify. The brooch measures approximately 2.5×2.75” and is signed, hallmarked and dated 2024.
